The mysterious road Fresno Ranch RR

mchambers Apr 09, 2006 01:02 PM

At the big turn on River Road just after the old sign of the ranch. It has been there for years/decades. Some people says a small plane runway. If so, why would it have painted center stripes at points ? Even though my first trip was down in the very early 70ties, I don't remember if this was the actual highway of those times. It appears to have been maybe. What i do remember is that parts of RR road was gravel/dirt but it may of been due to construction. This was before ANY Lajitas build up when there was just the old store and the land sale office place. My next trip 2 years later was when the Calvary Post motel was almost completed and we stayed there but had to " sign in " and pre-order any dinner in order for us to eat there. Does anybody remember this and that road ? thanks

In, I think, the late 70's, the bridge over Fresno Creek washed away in a flash flood. Not totally away, you can still see parts of it in the river where Fresno Creek meets the Rio. Anyway, the road you are talking about was a temporary road that was used while they rebuilt the road and the bridge over Fresno Creek.

that's why that bridge looks newer over Fresno creek/canyon. It's very possible the road and bridge was built and completed during one of my absent years. Because since 1973, I haven't missed too many years down. LOL !
