Our favorite snake was on Animal Planet!

Colchicine Apr 09, 2006 05:17 PM

I am in the middle of watching one of the "Most Extreme" series of shows on Animal Planet. This episode on "living dead" prominently showed a melanistic Eastern being picked on by a young cat and then death feigning (keep your cat INDOORS, btw). Of course it was relegated to the #10 spot but at least it got some recognition. Interestingly, the cat lost interest after the snake stopped moving and it tasted that musk. Also, they talked about how it seems so dead that it even attracts flies, while showing one walking around on the snake.

"The irrational fear of snakes is the only excuse a grown man has... to act like a complete sissy" - Colchicine

... nature has ceased to be what it always had been - what people needed protection from. Now nature - tamed, endangered, mortal - needs to be protected from people. When we are afraid, we shoot. But when we are nostalgic, we take pictures.

Its sad that someone recording that didn't help save snake from the cat what kind of sick people are there in this world. They find ratings to me more important than the poor snake thats being tortured for their profits.

I completely see your point, but in this case the snake didn't need to be "saved". The cat didn't appear to do any harm beyond the stress involved with the defensive display. For the purposes of an educational demonstration, it was necessary. But if it were entertainment, that would be a different story.

Hey, I saw that episode! I too thought the hognose should've been ceded higher than #10. That's OK, my little Western's #1 in my heart.

"The Big Squeeze" about the world's biggest constrictors. I sat down after a looooong day running the exotics' club open house room at KSU (where my hognose was a wonderful addition), and can't remember what channel it was on. It was a very interesting show from an informtion, but it did play to the 'fear factor' with stuff on how they have stalked people and gone into their homes etc etc... I really hate seeing snakes displayed in that light even when there is interesting information included alongside... but I felt good about having spent the day educating people about reptiles and other exotic animals
