Did a little field herping today and came across this little guy. I'm in sw MO. I know it's not the best pic but I forgot my camera and had to use a friends. He was around 6"-8" and was brown with absolutely no pattern. I will throw in a few other pics of a western worm snake and a skink (5 lined?) I think it is a western earth snake. Any input would be appreciated.

They especially love ants. BTW the snake in question was found under a rock that had an ants nest under it. I have heard that snakes are not usually found in ant nests so maybe it eats ants and/or ant pupae?

Hard to be 100% positive because the pics aren't exactly the best... Head shots would've helped in this situation.

Looks like an earth snake to me... My guess is smooth earth snake, but you'll need to look range maps to be certain on that note.

Yeah that's an albino rough earth snake with a couple normals from around Houston, TX. They popped up several times last year and I was able to obtain those.

Hey,

My guess is a Western earth snake, as you surmised. That is definately what it looks like. That is intersting, because last April, I had two Westen worm snakes shipped to me for some research from Missouri, and there was a gravid western earth snake that arrived along with them. Same state, same species, same time of year, and that absolutely beautiful Western worm snake looks exactly like one of mine did! Coincidence? I especially like the worm snake. That is a striking example with some beautiful, glossy coloration on the venter.

im sorry i hastally read the message.that is an earth snake.do you see them often?

Hotshot Apr 26, 2006 09:07 PM

That is either a western or rough earth snake. Hard to tell from the pics. Westerns have smooth to slightly keeled dorsal scales while the rough has keeled dorsal scales along the spine, hence the name "rough" earth snake.
