Vines for dart frogs

ruthiesea Apr 09, 2006 10:36 PM

I am looking for some vines for my dart frog terrarium. The plant must be native to Central/South America and able to grow in a humid, warm climate. A vine that is found where dart frogs live would be ideal. Of course, it has to be either small or prunable. I have looked at passiflora and Aristolochia fimbriata, but I really can't find info as to they are harmful to frogs. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Ficus pumilia, (several varieties,) Fittoni, such as varieties of F. verchaffeltii, Peperomia, vining Piper, Pilea sp., and Pellionia daveauana, pulchre, or "Argentea." are great vining plants for dart vivariums. You can aso use the smaller miniature varieties of ivy, (Hederea helix,) of which there are too many to list. Your main problem will not be in getting them to grow, but in controlling them once they take hold.

1. Pellionea daveauana
2. Peperomia campylotropa.
3. Pilea cadierii, Patty's Gold. Just a few examples still in the cutting stage.

It's usually promising to find simple vines at your local Lowe's or Walmart. Usually, these are simple ivy plants and the like though. If you are looking for something a little more exotic, Black Jungle is a really good supplier of a lot of exotic plants. Hope that helps. Would love to see pics of your set up tank. I just had a sweetly set up tank with multiple levels and bromiliads and ferns and the like, but my frogs were having trouble finding food and I didn't want to overwhelm the tank with insects so I decided that for now, simpler is better. Best of luck!
