sunshine's stil in the hole!?

mchiara Apr 10, 2006 06:02 AM

Now I am getting really worried.
7:00am and my femalae veiled is still in the hole since at least yetserday afternoon. She was turned around and laying eggs at 8:00 am. This morning she is stil in the same position, I checked (I had to take a small flash light in order to see her) and she looked at me....is it normal? Should I take het out, probably she's stuck in the hole and cannot get out?

I need advice ASAP since I have to leave to go to work for the whole day!

Thanks.

Chiara

Ok, now she moved and see her moving her legs as per covering or I don't know, but she's not trying to get out...might she stil really being working in there? She needs to warm up (for sure there is not 90-95 F basking degrees in that hole! It's sounds so long that she is in there, could she has just fallen asleep during the night and finishing now?? she didn't do this the other time.

Help!

Thanks,
Chiara

I would leave her alone. If you mess with her, in any way, you have a good chance of doing harm. They usually take care of thins just fine without us intervening.

I had to stop myself this last time. My female started digging in the morning, but was not out of the hole at night. I thought about picking her up(because they USUALLY finish before dark), so she could bask in the morning - but I knew better. I checker her in the morning, and she WAS basking, on her own - minus eggs, and no sign of the hole. She dug all through the night, laid her eggs and covered them up before first light.

Thanks for the reply.

She was already turned around and laying at ~8:00 pm, so, you think it is possible to take 12 hours and still be laying deep in the hole?

My concern is that she is taking more than 12 hours and she is far from finishing.

Hopefully she doesn't get too exhausted too and she will get out and bask, eat soon.

I will wait...

I know it's hard but be patient. Luna was in her laying tub one time for 18 hours! I think there is likely "resting" b/t "pushes" and if she has a lot it will take a long time. Luna did fall asleep in her hole atr least on of the times. Not sure how the setup is but you could shine a light on the outside of the tub(?) for some warmth, or on the soil, just not sirectly on her. Just giving the air around her soem warmth will be helpful - only if you don't have to disturb her to do it. But my guess is she will be fine. Here's a reminder of how much the body changes. These were taken one day apart

All is well Lele,

went to do my errands, came back and she is on top of the sand closing the hole....she really took much longer this time, but she wasn't that big at all...I suspect she DID fall asleep overnight and my light woke her up.
I'll wait few minuts to see if I can dig out eggs and then run to work...

Keep you all posted on how many eggs she laid this time (last was 56) later on tonight.

Have a good day,

Chiara

Always a relief when it all works out, huh?! We have to sometimes remind ourselves how they might deal with this in the wild. Maybe they would fall asleep for a time not only for rest, but to not bring attention to themselves for nighttime predators - this is mere speculation on my part.

Since I know nothing about fertile eggs I was never is any great hurry to get them out so I don't know how bad it would be if you left them in there while you are at work. If you can add some heat to the container they might be OK for 8 hours. Again, just spec.

Glad all is OK. Give her lots of water and a few snacks before you go
