Some animals are unable to absorb vitamins from outside sources. Dogs, for example, make their own vitamin C internally, as they need it.
For rodents, I believe that a required vitamin is made in the intestines and in order to utilize that vitamin, they must eat their own fecal matter. I don't know what vitamin though...I'll have to look it up because now I'm curious.

My mice eat their own crap, too. I think it is disgusting, but I have not been able to make them stop.
cheers.

Longtang. I like snakes and rats.
They do it to get the undigested food/vitamins from it. A lot of animals do this.
