Jeremy, congratulaions on the Blizzard..

kirby Apr 10, 2006 08:49 AM

First let me say congratulations to you on the production of a Blizzard even if it was not viable. I was not aware this had happened or I would not have used the Blizzard as an example in my posts below. What did it look like?

We have shared many conversations on this kind of topic over the years and what we clearly agree on is a desire to have consistancy. My posts below were not about whether I like the name snowglow or not. Rather, they were about promoting a consistant approach to the naming of new morphs based on what I have been told over the years. I understand your point about the first person to make combination hets with a sentinel animal and that could be a consistant point that people could agree on.

Like you, I try to use genetic descriptions of what I offer for sale such as 50% Hogg island het for blood instead of het for X. The reason for this is consistancy and My belief that I don't have a right to name X unless I produce it.

I also agree that this does not need to be a divisive issue. Hopefully people can come to some basic agreement on the naming of new morphs. If Tracy has a set protocol that may be a good starting point. There will be many new combination morphs in the next few years and I think this is a good time for the boa community to address this issue.

As to what is a Type 2, especially if it is compatible with type, we will leave that for another day.

Good luck to you this year.

Bill

Thanks Bill, but honestly, I have been completely humbled, by the project. It is one of my favorites, and here is why. First, the Challenge. It really makes it worthwhile. Second, The Bloodline combination is probably one of the strongest I have. The DH's breed and get pregnant faster then any other Boas I have. They don't give many sluggs, and they are just awesome snakes. All the babies (And I have raised up a LOT) from the bloodline, are incredible, and they are just a solid snake. I'm shocked at how strong they are even though I have inbred 2 generations. So, now this year I finally had some different bloodline to work in to get that problem resolved.

Here is the update. Right now, I have my first DH Blizzard female due to drop in the next week. Then her sister in a month, and another. They are loaded, but I have a HUGE Bad luck issue with the numbers. OF 6 litters we have produced so far, we have YET to get a LIVE Blizzard. There have actually been 2 still borns. One here, and one of my customers. They are INCREDIBLE to say the least, however, I don't want to make an attempt at discribing them because anything still born or premature usually doesn't look how they should. I'm very excited to try to produce a LIVE one.

The 1 in 16 is a LOT harder then people think. I have actually produced many Snow Boas that were also Dead, so that is frustrtating, but I'm really keeping my fingers crossed for this year. Weather it Be ME, or anyone else I really don't care, and the NAMING thing isn't really important to me on this matter.

It was the reason we are talking about it, so It does bring up a LOT of questions. I personally think that the BLIZZARD name should be consitent with a basic understanding of the two traits, and I think that most Boa People understand that.

There have been many other points that have been brought up, and it would be great to get some consitency, and I agree with you that it should be done in a good respectful manner.

I also think that the person who produces DH's of a Common trait should name them that, and the morph produced should be called that. Example, Blizzard, Ghost, Snow, Sunglow, etc...

Where it does get complicated is like what you mentioned with your Hoggs X Blood (which by the way are INCREDILBE ANIMALS). I can see your point with not wanting to Name them a certain name. It can get complicated in that manner, and I think a Protocol is necessary. I have my opinion, but I don't want to discuss it without others inputs. There are soo many issues. Bloodlines, GENES, and MORPHS. We tend to combine them, and that may be the problem. Heck, the LOCALS are so difficult to understand, that is its own complicated issue. IMPERATOR!!!!!!!

I'll keep you updated on the Blizzard project, and many others this year. I hope that you are having a great year, and I wish everyone else the best. I do promise to take a picture this year of a STILL BORN blizzard should that be the case. I hope that it isn't. LOL!!!

Then you can tell us more about your thoughts on the type 2. Having bred type 1 and 2 together and finding them compatible makes it a confusing issue for me at best. I am anxious to know if type1 dhets for snow can breed with type 2 dhets for blizzard. I think you should come up with the name for that one.

Bill,

I think they may be compatible, but untill I see a live version of a breeding of the two together, it is still up in the air. I think a breeding of Type 1 and 2 should be done to see if ALL the babies come out anery. Then there will be no doubt. That is the problem with Dead and premature offspring. Many of them look Anerythristic. (Not saying that is the case with your breeding).

Even if they do prove to be compatible, I believe that some type 2's are carrying a different trait that may knock off the yellow. That is yet to be proven, but I think it may. Time will tell us the answers.

As far as the Type 1 and 2, I think it is good to have the distinction to let people know they are working with CA's and Columbians. However, I can see a future problem with that because there have been Type 2's pop up from Nicaragua, Mexico, and Panama. So, are all those Compatible? I don't know.

The BLIZZARD Bloodline I am working with is Mexican. I also have another group of unrelated Sonoran Type 2 anerytrhistics. They were aquired from a European breeder that popped them out from 2 normal Sonorans. He has successfully done this a few times now, and they are AWESOME!!!! They are almost identical to "Black Magic" (the Sire Type 2 I used for the project). I don't know if they are even compatible with the Nics that are a lot more common. I would ASSUME they are, but again, I don't know.

I was thinking about using a DH Blizzard to a DH ghost female this year to see if the two would work, but it didn't happen. So, I guess we can wait for the future. That is what makes this soo much fun. The FUTURE.

Hi Jeremy,
I am trying to contact you regarding your type two anery sonorans as I also breed these. I am interested in finding unrelated lines to mine to strengthen the bloodline. I tried contacting you via the contact link above but it failed. COuld you send me you e-mail address or contact number for a quick chat.
Thanks,
