That photo was taken as is with all the snakes on a large piece of white melamine. I started with a small group of three boas and just kept adding one after another after another. Amazingly enough, they were holding still so I just kept snapping photos. So, I have all these group shots where the group just keeps growing by one boa every photo LOL!
Sean did have to do a little bit of post processing in Photoshop but the only thing he did was cut out the background because you can see the wall and the edges of the piece of melamine, etc. So he just cut out the whole group and put them on a solid white background (but they were on a white background already so it doesn't look "unnatural" like it would if he were to put it on a solid black background).
As for the speedlights - I just used the one! I love that SB800! What a great piece of equipment! I didn't use any of macro speedlights because I had to be pretty far away from the subjects to take the photo. I used my 60mm macro lens because I like how sharp that lens is.
