Blood after a breeding

cmscorns Apr 10, 2006 02:19 PM

I was checking up on my pair of caramels and noticed a patch of blood that measured approximately 3 inches by 3 inches. I have not heard of this in any of the other posts and have not witnessed this in any of my other pairs. The exterior of each snake appears normal. I did witness the male biting the female gently behind her head but there are no visible breaks in her skin or dislodged scales. I did not monitor the snakes the entire time they were together. Is it possible the one or both of his hemipenis' could have torn and caused the blood or is there another possible explaination.

Both snakes are acting normal and I moved the female back to her cage. I have contacted my local vet (although he does not specialize in snake he does have a great interest in them and their care and he volunteers his services to teachers like me).

It happens sometimes... Unless one of the snakes appears to be suffering for it, I wouldn't worry too much. If you're still concerned, then it doesn't hurt anything to have your vet look the snakes over.
