I must be a newbie

draybar Apr 10, 2006 07:37 PM

I take photos of everything I find while field herping.
Actually about 99.9% of my field herping is for the photos.
There is always a slight chance I might find something worth bringing home.
went herping in Alabama yesterday and took a picture of a black rat snake.what a newbie
oh yeah.......and a copperhead

that you find a copperhead sitting in the water. Did you find it there or did it get spooked and slither into the water? Nice pics, Jimmy!
And good point...you don't have to be a newbie or a novice to appreciate common, local, backyard stuff.
On any day of the week back in Houston, I could go out and find 5 southern copperheads...but their beauty has never failed to amaze me.
IMO, practically any snake is a work of art.

I let the copperhead go next to a creek and it slid on in and set there for a little while.
the water sure did bring out it's colors, didn't it?
Copperheads are some of the most beautiful snakes out there in my opinion.
If they weren't venomous, I would definitely be keeping them!

glad you got my point...LOL

Great pictures. I love the pattern and color of copperheads (and many other venomous snakes). I certainly feel backyard herping is just as exciting as going to some exotic country to herp. Course up here in Canada, we don't have anywhere near a variety of snakes as found in most states. We do have a large amount of amphibians

One goal I have to do either this summer or next, is to go herping for our only provincial native venomous snake, the Eastern Massasauga Rattler. (native to southwestern Ontario). just have to track down somebody who is experienced with venomous snakes and has a good ideal where to find them, soI am not just wondering around in the woods looking to get lost LOL.

Nice southern copper, Jimmy. Pit vipers have always been an interest of mine too, just have a rule about not keeping vens. I have seen copperheads in creek bottoms in OH fairly often, but usually not in the water. Thanks...
