Tanks on a balcony

athos_76 Apr 10, 2006 10:10 PM

Hey all,
I just moved to a second story apartment, and I have my two snappers each in a 75. Well I built a nice tank stand for them with an cabinet for the canister filters. I want to put them on my balcony since this apartment is considerably smaller than my last (2/2 compared to my old 3/2, where 1 was the herp room.)
The sun doesn't directly hit the balcony thanks to it facing north. I was wondering what considerations I would need to take to keep them there. As far as pests and stuff... thanks in advance..

birds for sure, mostly the crap all over the cage... Your balcony may or may not be out of reach to cats, racoons ect.

Also, the weather. Huge winds may rock a tank enough to tip it over. Balcony's often arn't the most level in an attempt to keep water from pooling. Torrential rain might also mess things up really good.

I guess the final risk would be if the turtle happened to get out (a slim chance, but again, what if it overflows with rain water, gets hit with a baseball ect) then your turtles are outside, and if they survive the fall, then they are gonners.

So, my take on it... I guess if you have too, but I'd keep'm inside.

Well, I'm on the second floor, and the stand I built could last through a hurricane. As far as birds go, if they get close enough to the kids, they are fair game.

As far as flooding due to heavy rain, its doubtful. the tanks arent close to the edge, and Just in case, I'm putting a little kiddie wall on the balcony railing so they can't squeeze through

sounds good, just keep your trouble shooting ahead of any problems

On the plus side, the turt's will probably enjoy the fresh air.
