Lucutis needs a new cage...ideas?

waspinator421 Apr 11, 2006 12:58 AM

Hello fellow cham enthusiasts! Lucutis is outgrowing his cage faster than I anticipated, and he needs a new one soon. I plan to build him a new one in about a month or so. Does anybody have any good tips? I know I've seen somebody here use aluminum screen and another kind of large plastic mesh stuff (technical term) to prevent climbing directly on the screen. What is that stuff?

Any suggestions welcome! Thanks in advance for all your help!

Also.... I took him outside today for the first time this year and he LOVED it! As soon as the sun hit him he fired up and stayed that way the whole time! He was so bright, I couldn't beleive it. I feel like I've been depriving him with his artificial lighting, lol. I took some pictures, but am unable to post them right now. I will get them up as soon as possible.

Build the cage anyway you want to! Build it to customize his needs as well as yours! I would put casters on it so you can roll it outside since he seems to enjoy it so much. In the new cage make it BIG and pt in some nice sized hibiscus. Chams go head over heels for 'em!

As for what screen to use, i would use PVC coated wire. Even though it is expensive, it is the most durable stuff on the face of the Earth! We have a cage made 12 years ago, with PVC mesh and the mesh shows no signs of breking down! Pretty strong huh!

Good luck and ask if you have any more questions!

The top and front door are aluminum wire screen. The back and two sides are 'garden sun blocker'. Air passes though. Water and light doesnt pass through aswell.

I have built 3 cages in the past few months and have learned a bit in the process.

The first was a large cage. I had problems getting it through the door in my room. It is 4 feet tall, 4 feet wide and 2.5 feet deep. It is a very nice cage. I had to make the top screen stronger by putting 1/4 inch wire mesh screen under the metal screen. My cat was sleeping on top and was about to fall through when I had just a screen on the top. But I stopped the cat from sleeping on the cage. The spray bottom is now hated by my cat. Squirt

The second cage was smaller. The height was 5 feet, 2 feet deep but only 1.5 feet wide. I made it for an outside cage. But it really needs to be wider. That is the only down side to the cage.

The newest I have not yet finished. I worked on it some today. It is 5.5 feet tall and 2 feet deep and 2 feet wide. I think this is a good size. It is half the large cage, but just a bit taller. I want to put the plastic mesh in this cage if I can find it.

I hope this will give you some ideas.

Nice cages! I particularily like the first pic. Good job youi have mastered the technique of cage building! I prefer to jsut make the cage suit one purpose:the chams. Mine are never complex or nice looking. In fact most are quite slopply lookin!

Congrats!
