Gravid/eggbound?

sardoniccheese Apr 11, 2006 01:23 AM

I was just wondering if this gecko looks gravid to you guys? She only weighs 45 grams and was never housed with a male. But it looks like she is egg bound. I am worried and I just want somoene to tell me that I am wrong and that those are fat. I took 2 pictures, the third picture is of a gecko I know is gravid.

I count at least six eggs inside her. Now, that can be bad. However I had a female that refused to breed this year (her first year) and she looked like that for a little while. I gave her warm soaks, and kept an eye on her tummy. She finally absorbed them. He eggs were mostly still pinkish, not so white, meaning the shell was not forming on the eggs which makes it easier for them to absorb. I'd show her to your herp vet and see what he/she says. The vet would be able to see more than we can in the photo.

6 eggs? Thats absurd! Those are follicles and are not eggs! The follicles will turn into eggs as the females body lets her, but she by no means has 6 eggs in her and Im not sure how you came to that conclusion.

So, if they aren't eggs, what should i do about them?

I would suggest just keeping an eye on her. If they start to grow, and get a more oblong shape to them (which leopards have been reported to lay up to 3 eggs in one clutch), make sure she has a site to lay them. Until you see them start to look more like eggs, them just keep an eye on her.

Follicles yes! But it was easier to explain saying they were eggs without a shell formed yet, which in laymen's terms is what they are. So, no I'm not crazy. Yes she should be watched as I stated. If they all start to develop shells she could be in trouble. The problem with egg binding is that you really don't know for sure until you open the female up.

No follicels are not eggs, they are unfertilized ova, which is not even close to what an egg is. It isnt uncommon to have 12 follicles in a female of breeding age. As 2 get fertilized, there are 2 more that develop further, that take the last 2's place. It is common to see that much ova in a mature female (and notice how none of them are the same size?), so I dont believe you have anything to worry about, because eggs dont harden inside the female, they harden a few hours after laying.

So.. should I breed her? Or will she pass these on her own? Like I said she is only 45 grams, which is why i am concerned.

I am not going to say breed her, because if something happened to her I wouldnt want to feel like I was the reason for it. I just recently got a clutch of eggs from my 41 gram bell albino.
