Baby RETF

rotcgirl84 Apr 11, 2006 08:25 AM

I just got a baby RETF and I put him in a tank with wet paper towels and a plastic plant. I misted quite a few times and throughout the night but when I went to sleep for a few hours and woke up I found him all dried up on the bottom of the tank. He was no bigger than 3/4 of an inch. Any idea of how I can keep the tank humitdity up without staying up 24/7 and misting every hr?

All frogs need a water dish! Just because it's a tree frog doesn't mean it doesn't like to sit in water. Fill up the dish so that it doesn't go over his head and drown him, keep it clean, change it every day. But for god's sake, put some water in there! You only have to mist twice a day!

I think my frog owns a megaphone....

I just found out what happened. I did have a water dish in there but my roommates took the plastic off of my screen cover. I have a glass one now which keeps the humidity quite well (80% to 95%). It has a few holes for ventilation as well. My pesky roommates now know not to touch my frogs or terrariums.... They got me a new frog after they found out what happened.

Your frog can not possibly be happy living on paper towels! At the very least get some type of substrate in there and live plants are best (pothos is super easy to grow, it's as tough as a weed) but one is not enough. Also a shallow water dish that is easy to get in and out of, they only like to be partially wet.

Paper towels absorb, at least a good substrate will hold some moisture. Also make sure your temps are correct.

i agree with not being happy on paper towels, but it is the safest for BABY animals, i hate using it, but they poop a lot and would get impacted easy with anything else.

How long would you need to keep them like that? On paper towels I mean? Is that the best way to keep them?

that is completly up to you, i have kept a lot of frogs on them, i just put my blue dumpy in with moss and he's about 1.5 in now. it is pretty safe to have live moss cause it stays in one piece on the ground. good luck!

I tried the first one with moss and it didn't work well and kept the humidity low. It's doing well with the paper towels and all I really don't like to keep the terrarium like that though. It's really exciting to see the little guy grow! =-) Thanks for all your help!

glad to hear everything is working out, if you have more questions about stuff when he gets older don't hesitate to ask. post some pics, i bet it's adorable!

Oh, yeah... it's SO cute! I'm having trouble taking pictures of the little guys though. I think they are camera shy... And then the picture doesn't turn out when I do get a chance. Your little guy is cute. How old is it?

i know what you mean, some animals are camera shy. i finally got a new camera and it works a lot better. i found if you take a picture from far away and then zoom in it comes out a lot clearer. my frog (melman) is about 3 months old and has tripled in size since i got him. good luck and keep me posted!
