Stubby II Field Collecting Light

Tim_e Apr 11, 2006 10:07 AM

Guys: Many of you have these lights. My Brother lost mine and I'm now gonna order a replacement.Question: Which Coiled Cord length is the most comfortable 1ft-5ft(they stretch/expand)or the 2ft-10ft? These cords are kinda heavy so I like it short, but is the 1ft-5ft something you always end up fighting with? what do ya Think Tim http://www.saftlite.com/itemdetail.asp?itemno=1713-0005&urlcatid=002

The 512T is comperable to the stuby II

The 912T is like two Stuby II's you can turn on each bulb independently... for 13Watt or 26Watt

Order it instead, many people swear by them now.

for those bayco lights. They say the power source is through the lighter plug. How do you walk cuts with them?

Joe Forks Apr 11, 2006 09:00 PM

aka "deer feeder batteries" will fit the bill. rig the connector and throw it in a belt or back pack.

yomamma Apr 11, 2006 09:07 PM

what kind of run time do you get out of them? How does the run time on this light compare with the stubby? Hows it hangin Joe?

>>what kind of run time do you get out of them? How does the >>run time on this light compare with the stubby?

I've never used these new lights, so I'll have to defer. The stubby will run as long as you can walk on 12 volt 7 amps.

>>Hows it hangin Joe?

Low and loose.

I think the Stubby II has a 1.1 amp draw, so the 7 amp hour battery would run it for about 6 hours and 20 minutes. The 26 watt Bayco should have double the draw unless it's wired funky which would provide about a 3 hour run time on a 7 ah battery. The 13 Watt unit works great for me. The 26 watt has the "bigger & brighter" alure, but more diffuse light when the 13 watt gives me what I want is a bit much. It's all personal preference.

Joe is right about the run time on a Stubby. Mine has run all night long without a hitch. I'm glad I had it when I was without power after the hurricanes of '04. I did replace the original battery. I picked one up at Tractor Supply for about 15 bucks if I recall correctly. That Bayco light comes with 65' of cable. I would cut that way back. Remember that cord length equals resistance. I paid $130 bucks for my Stubby about 5 years ago with the short coiled cord and belt pack for the battery. That was money well spent. If you are into some extended cut walking, that set-up is the way to go.

The 912T is going to be new for me this year so some of this assumption.

You can turn either bulb on one at a time to get what should be 6 hour run time on 1 13W bulb. With both bulbs burning, 3 hours sounds about right.

My best battery find was at Academy Sports & Outdoors. It is the same size and weight as a 12 volt 7amp but it is rated at 8 amps. It was $15 last year when I picked up a couple.

To charge them in your hotel you will need a AC adapter, this is something that takes a little creativity. I recomend at least a 1amp AC adapter if you can find it for quick charging. Look at things like keyboard chargers, power supplies for old elcectronics or just go to radio shack. I have found good solutions for this in so many places now.

ChrisH has used the 912T in the field and likes it. His input would nice here too. And remember you can run it at either 13W or 26W while you are walking. You have that flexability.

I have used the Stubby II and both of the Baycos. I really like the 912T. The switch is easy to use and you can get a little bit more power if you want it. I generally hunt with one bulb and just switch on the second when I see a "hey what is that" type object.

I recently bought a rechargeable Bayco stubby-like light at Home Depot. It supposedly only lasts for 100 minutes, but I used it in Florida and it lasted quite a bit longer than that. It recharges quickly (less than an hour) in the 12V socket of my truck.

The best part is there is no cord, and no stinking lead acid 12V battery to lunk around. It weighs about the same as a maglite.
You could buy two of these and never be without light and save the herniated disk from lugging batteries around.

Or just walk for two hours, drive a while to recharge, walk, drive, etc. I don't know about the longevity of the batteries (how many recharges it will take).

It will be my wand of choice this year. Of course, I will have my 912T as a backup.

Was that I may not be happy with the output. It runs at 7.2 volts right? I was afraid that would translate to a little less light output than the 12 volt cousins.

Plus lunking that battery around is good exercise

The Home Depot rechargeable runs a 13 watt bulb so the output should be the same as the stubby or the single bulb Bayco. The design probably incorporates an engineered increase in amperage so the 7V battery will run the 13 Watt bulb effectively. I saw the rechargeables at Home Depot, but often times the batteries sold with devices like that are pretty sub-standard and the battery's rather proprietary design would make it impossible to replace unless you could buy more from a dealer or distributor. Please keep us updated on the lifetime of the battery. It seems like a good light but I'd like to hear about its' longer-term performance before I go buy one. Man I love flashlights! LOL

It says that the 912t is like 2 stubby II (a switch for 13/26 watt operation) Can this thing really get twice as bright a stubby II ? or just a little brighter but use WAY more Battery life? Can anyone Anser this from experience? TIM

LBenton Apr 13, 2006 08:22 AM

I do not think it is twice as bright. But you can see the difference with no doubt.

The wands are nice but if you want a lot of light get a Princeton Tec dive light. You can buy them in tons of configurations and the top of the line models use LED's. They give you the burn time (battery life) with eack light on the website.

Is the e for "Evans"?

Lance

Tim_e Apr 11, 2006 10:15 PM

It's Tim E for EAGAN (my last name)

alterna63 Apr 12, 2006 10:51 AM

Hey Tim, don't hit any deer this year with your vehicle!! makes too much of a mess!!! See ya out West bud!

Tim_e Apr 12, 2006 01:35 PM

Do ya think I should get some of those "Deer whistles" Do They even Work? Do you have Jim or Ken Dobis's Phone # or Email? TIM

alterna63 Apr 12, 2006 11:44 PM

They surely would not hurt. I only have the e-mail for Jim Dobis via this forum. You may can go back and find a posting from him on this forum and e-mail him that way. He does monitor this forum so he may read your e-mail. Did you get real grill lights (spots) on your vehicle or do you still have blocks of wood with the lights on top?

Forgot to call you yesterday. I just sent you an email with the info. Take care.

LBenton Apr 13, 2006 08:28 AM

I would think that if they worked at all it would only spook the deer into the road... Get them lined up for impact.

Like Ron White said... If you could slow a bullet down to 55mph with little headlights and a horn blaring you would never miss the deer.

mchambers Apr 13, 2006 11:52 AM

whistles for the likes of Hollister and Anderson to be put in use by them on RR ? LOL !

I may be old , cantankerous, crabby, and cynical, but......

No, your former roommate (Evans) lives up in Little Rock, AR. He comes down to Texas once in a while and I see him when he is here in San Antonio for the herp expos. He and I went to Florida over spring break looking for lizards.

pretending to catch a Miami-phase cornsnake. I actually found it, but he posed for the "herper flips trash and finds snake" shot.

I guess that means you are still everybodies photographer?

I may be in the Florida area for about 3-4 weeks in June to July. I may need to start learning some of the nice places to spend a day looking for herps. I will be all over Fl too, not just one area.

I use the "stubby" light from Wistol Supply located in Dallas. They have the 6 ft. curly Q cords. This works best for me. They have belts and packs to carry the 12 V dry cell.
