European Green Toad question

Turtasal Apr 11, 2006 06:13 PM

Does anyone know if this toad, bufo viridis, can go under another name like Moroccan Green Toad? Of course he's at a petshop and of course no one there knows. I'd appreciate any input.

From what I understand bufo viridis is spread over a large large so that they come with different names. There is the Russian Green Toad, the European green toad, Moroccan, Egyptian and so forth. I've heard they each have slightly different colorations and different needs. But i don't know how different.

I have a post a few down about a Moroccan Toad. I purchased mine at Petco and this is what it was labeled as. No one here could answer my question. However on another board someone did. It's yahoo groups "Frogmail" here is what she said...

"Jessy,
Your toad Adrian appears to be a European green toad, Bufo
viridis. I know Petco has been getting those in a lot lately, and
though I'm usually not very fond of that chain, I've bought several
because they're really great toads and the ones they've had have been
some of the prettiest I've ever seen. They've been labeling them
Moroccan toads or Moroccan green toads, I think. A Google search using
the scientific name should pull up some information.
Green toads should be fine at normal household humidity levels, as
long as they have a water dish and some damp soil to sit on. Toads in
general tolerate a fair amount of dryness and don't really like to be
too wet.

Very interesting because I did indeed see this toad at Petco. Thank you both for your replies.

Sure np. These toads have been extremly easy to care for and very enjoyable. I oringinally had one about 2 months ago. I liked him so much that last friday I got a second. The second is slightly smaller but I have had no problems. They both sit togethor under the log most of the day and they dont even fight over food. YIPPIE! And sunday I heard them chirp for the first time.

The nice thing is they feed 2-3 times a week. I spend my weekend at my boyfriends house. So friday eve. before I leave I make sure they have fresh water, give them some food and then come home sunday evening and do the same. I change there water daily and their substrait once every two weeks to once a month.

For substrait I use this shreaded coconut fiber. It comes in a brick at petco and is about 5 bucks. My tank is 10 gallons and I only need half the brick. You place the brick in water and let it expand. I have a box set up so I make the whole thing at once and store the other half. I have a tiny garden trowl that is my daughters that I keep in there to turn the soil and keep everything moist every once in awhile.

The lady at petco told me that I needed a heat lamp. I found out later that I actully dont. And when it comes time to clean I have a tiny crittor coral. probably only a foot long and 6 inches wide. If that. I can put them both in with out problem when I need to clean the cage. Originally I put them in the tub but I know if grandma ever sees that she will die. My daughter absolutly loves them too.

And sometimes petco runs out of crickets. I find the simplist solution to this....earth worms. I just go and dig some up chop em up and toss them in a food dish for them.

Good luck with 'em
