Is it okay to introduce...

lanie024 Apr 11, 2006 07:37 PM

Since my geck is a female.. would it be okay to introduce another male/female to her cage?

I've had her for almost 2 years.

If yes, AWSOME, and why? If not, why not?

well... yea i guess introducing a male would be ok, if you are ready to have babies.
the male more than likely will mate with her.

as for the females, im not sure what to tell you.
some females wont mind sharing space with another female, but some do, specially when you introduce at this age.
if you would of introduced them when they were babies the chances of there being a problem are less.

if you decide to introduce a male, expect babies.
if you decide to introduce a female, see how they both react to each other, and if they dont seem to get along, separate them.

Yeah, well i was thinking of buying one from petco and i guess i can always return it if they dont get along.. as horrible as that sounds.

What are the chances of them mating anyway?

first of all petco is one of the worst places to get a reptile, especialy geckos. i admit some of my girls and boys are from there but i have gotten really lucky. my other geckos who have passed on a while back where from petco and died probably becuase they were disseased infested. also all the petcos arround my area in so. cal. never take care of them and i have been to many of them if different counties.

okay second of all: you need to keep any new animal quarantined for at least THREE MONTHS before introducing it to another, or have it checked by a REPTILE VET, not just a cat/dog vet unless they also specialize in reptiles. a lot of the time, regular vets dont know anything about reptiles.

Third of all: yes another female would probably be okay. a male would probably give you babies and if you are ready for maybe up to 16-20 eggs and have incubators and extra space, go for it.

fourth of all: introducing one male to one female can work, FOR A FEW DAYS! the male will probably breed the female to death. this means the male will probably continuosly breed to the female causing major stress and lead to not eating and then death. a 2 female to 1 male ratio would be better.

okay im not trying to sound harsh. just wanted to give some GOOD advice.

lanie024 Apr 11, 2006 10:48 PM

NO NO NO. i think thats awsome advice.

Thanks for being so detailed. these are the kind of answers i need!

Btw, Are you SURE it would be okay to introduce another female?

because i was told by another person that they might attack each other.

keep in mind that she is 2 years old.

Is there any way i can tell that shed be aggresive or not?

well like i said you would really need to quarantine the new female and make sure its a female for 3 months at least. but there is no for sure way to tell if they will be aggresive or not. i just watch very carefully and if they start to huff and puff at each other i kinda distract them somehow so they dont think mean thoughts. haha if someone does know a way on how to tell let me know :D they should also be around the same size because sometimes they wont mean to bully each other but one might be a quicker eater then the other and they want get as mutch nutrition as they need. i feed my leos as many crix as they can eat.

I hate to say this, but what if it doesnt work out?

I dont have the money to buy a new tank and stuff..

what about returning it?

is that possible?

well i suppose if they accept returns after 3 months.....i had to give one of my african fat tails away two days ago because i didnt have time for her. i had to send her UPS and it cost me 50 dollars so maybe i just wouldnt advise it but it is your decision. i have 23 right now.

lanie024 Apr 11, 2006 11:08 PM

yeah i guess.

I should take a pic of my cage set up to see if its proper for another geck to live in.

I live like 2 minutes away from petco and i would only buy from a breeder that lives close.

if you do decide to get a leo from petco get it when they get a brand new shipment. the risk of disease will be a little lower

lanie024 Apr 11, 2006 11:29 PM

OKAY! will do!

why dont YOU go to bed?? hahah

well if you do get a gecko from petco and its not eating right, and/or doesn't adapt well with your other female, then its not your fault, theres not much you can do but return it.

its not your fault, its not the geckos fault, and it may not even be petcos fault (unless were talking about the "not eating" part since petco often times does sell diseased animals).

so do what you gotta do, and dont waste your money on an animal you wont enjoy to the fullest.

... but hopefully your female will adapt with the new female very well, creating an unseparable bond that will last a lifetime. and they'll both grow super healthy, happy and strong.
and who knows... for all you know the "female" was never really a female! and next thing you know... you have a bunch of baby geckos running around and singing happy songs all day

p.s.: why dont you both go to bed
