Question on colors Parents vs Baby

sacredpurr Apr 11, 2006 09:28 PM

Hi All,
I was reading on a site about their Beardies and they call the baby the color it looks like and then put the parents color which are completely different. A example is as follows:
Father Red/Gold Sandfire
Mother Hypo Red
Baby Orange Sandfire
So please explain. I have always called the baby what the parents are like this:
Father: Red/Gold Sandfire
Mother: Hypo Red
Baby: Red/Gold Sandfire x Hypo Red.
Which is correct? I want to make sure I am doing this correctly when naming the color of the baby but I can't see how Its right to call the baby something its parents aren't. Maybe because I am a Manx Cat and German Shepherd breeder also so I am getting mixed up since I realize genetically dragons aren't the same as cats and dogs. Thanks for any help you can give me on this. Deb

Here's what I do, if the dragon is orange, I call it orange, if it is red I call it red, if it is purple with green spots, I call it purple with green spots, no matter what the breeding is. I am tired of all these names out there for the same thing!!

In my opinion, as long as you describe the dragon, you are just fine! For instance, my "gold" dragon is really a red/gold sandfire X normal cross, and I may include that description as well, but to me she is still just Gold!

I had a few clutches of orange sandfire X red/gold sandfire x light normal babies last year, and let me tell you that was a pain in the butt to type in every single add I placed, I should have just said yellow, gold and orange babies for sale!

I have seen sooooo many dragons called blood that have hardly any red in them! To me, blood dragons need to be BLOOD RED.

I think names and descriptions can get very confusing. I like simple!

There is no hard and fast rule on beardie color like corn snakes or ball pythons, unfortunately.

Hope I didnt confuse you more, I get confused with them every day!

Sarah

Your absolutly right. The babies cannot be anything the parents aren't. to breed a red sandfire x orange glow, and call all the yellow babies yellows, orange babies orange or some other fancy name is doing a huge disservice to breeding projects as well as bearded dragons as a whole. You can use names, colors etc. but when it comes down to selling your babies customers/future breeders should know exactly what lineage the babies are born out of to do their best in choosing unrelated mates..
