bullsnake egg incubation question

gartergoddess Apr 11, 2006 11:09 PM

We were surprised yesterday with a clutch of bullsnake eggs. These aren't from one of our snakes, but of a friend's & he needed someone to incubate the clutch.

We've never bred our snakes, so we're pretty clueless on this! Most of the information we've found seems to conflict.

Can anyone recommend an ideal "set up" (temps, humidity, etc) for incubating these eggs?

The guy who gave them to us is incubating another clutch already. He's reported that the eggs have turned a light tan color.

The ones we have are off-white, but some appear to be light tan as well. I should note that there are a couple of slugs stuck in this bunch & it's pretty easy to tell the difference between the fertile eggs and the slugs.

It looks like there are 13 viable eggs. The clutch was laid yesterday. Some of the eggs are dimpling slightly (not enough humidity?).

The current set up is a homemade incubator & the temp is hovering at the 80-83 range. The eggs themselves are in a container with vermiculite & enough water to make it moist (not too wet). There are some holes in the container to allow for airflow.

Most eggs are stuck together - one is off on its own. All are on top of the vermiculite (most places seem to indicate the eggs should stay exposed?).

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

sounds like you're on the right track. i'd maybe lower the temps to 78* or so to reduce the dimpling though. you can keep the humidity fairly constant by placing a small cup of water in there w/ them. you won't have to re-wet the vermiculite as often that way. good luck!

thanks for the info.

It's my mother who's incubating these (we share custody of all our snakes). I hadn't actually seen the eggs. Was just going off her description.

Turns out she's actually using perlite (not vermiculite like she'd mentioned).

I have 2 pics of the eggs (you can see the two slugs). Some are a bit dimpled, but the humidity's now up to at least 90%. Something odd, though...about 5 of the eggs have developed odd lines on them! I somehow doubt this is a good sign. Any clue as to what they are? Are those eggs bad as well? Other than the slugs, is the egg color ok? I have read that bullsnake eggs are off-white.

Here are the two pics. They're quite large so that people can zoom in to see the detail.

Once again, thanks for the info./advice.
