Kingsnake field pics from the weekend...

Phil Peak Apr 12, 2006 11:58 AM

For those of you that enjoy kingsnake pics from the field, here's a selection of some seen over the past few days in Kentucky. This one a large male from Jefferson county.

Calloway county.

Another Calloway county.

Hickman county.

Hopkins county.

Another Hopkins county.

Trigg county.

In all we found nine kingsnakes (plus two DOR's) in seven different counties. Sorry about the poor quality of the images. I'm having some resizing issues with my photo's that I hope to resolve soon.

Best to all! Phil

Thanks Phil,

Hopkins animals are exceptional, Can't wait to get up there...hopefully soon.

Thanks Bart. With the exception of the Jefferson county snake these were all found in western Ky around the swamps and sloughs. Kings from these area's tend to retain more of the juvenile patterning as adults. My next post will most likely feature Kentucky kings from upland habitats such as ridge tops and and other drier envions. Kings from these places tend to be more patternless and very black.

Nice photos and they sure seem to be plentiful there! They also look like they find plenty of food!

Thanks Matt. We are blessed with good numbers of kingsnakes here. Knowing when and where to search helps too. There is often a misconception that wild snakes are struggling to survive. The reality is the strongest survive and the rest become part of the food chain. The typical snake we find is healthy and robust. Phil

And I still plan to head of to Ky. soon, so I'll touch base with you guys on what might be a good time to catch up with you.

Is Jefferson County the one that contains Louisville? I lived in Louisville from April '95 until August '96, but I wasn't doing snakes back then. I remember going to Otter Creek Park to hike sometimes. I was in a bad situation with my job, but I still remember Louisville pretty fondly. These are nice animals.

It's not how many snakes you have. It's how happy and healthy you can keep them.

Phil Peak Apr 13, 2006 05:01 PM

One and the same Bill. The wooded knobs just south of Louisville has nice populations of kingsnakes. We usually even see one or two in our yard each year. Phil

.... do you ever pinch yourself to make sure it's real?
I don't know which look I like best....sometimes a jet black with no hint of specks or bars...then at other times I really like a patterned one...
Probably end up with a bunch of them someday..
