decorative plants for juve redfoot?

ghostco Apr 12, 2006 01:28 PM

I am looking into decorating my juve redfoot's enclosure with live plants. I was wondering if anyone has any types of plants that the could recommend, that would not hurt the tortoise and would grow well in his enclosure "climate" (95 to 60 at night, huge amount of humidity).

i have kept russians and sulcattas, that would eat ANYTHING natural i put in their enclosures. And while i dont mind the guy eating the plants, i just want to make sure that they are not poison or dangerous for him to eat.

I had a friend who kept yellowfoots, and he decorated one of his enclosures with fake plants. I don’t know if it was because they were underfed or because the plants looked like…well plants, but one of the yellowfoots ingested one of the fake plants and ended up dying. Is this a common thing to have happen? Or were they just underfed?

Thanks

Sedum, in all of its variaties, is a good choice. The tortoise will probably keep it eaten down to the roots but the trick is to set the pots in the enclosure (not actually plant it) & rotate them out so they can recover. They grow pretty quickly so it shouldn't take more than 3 pots of whatever you decide on to keep it looking good. Two can be out in the yard recovering to replace the one being eaten in the pen.

I've got plastic plants in my indoor pen & they've never tried to eat 'em. The Egyptian sleeps under the greenery & the others just tend to ignore it.
