near the resevoir, under a rock. I thought kingsnake, someone else thought bullsnake, and I know nothing about the local snakes I might expect to find. What do you think? the color sort of fades to brown on his tail, which I think you can see in the pic. I have more of the head and belly-- if they would be heplful just let me know. Thanks!

almost definitely a juvenile eastern king, as L.g.holbrooki isn't found in NY.
However, head shots could verify this.

Its a speckled. I used to be stationed at Ft. Riley and catch them there by tuttle creek lake all the time.

awesome! this is the first king we've found, lots of water snakes, the occasional ringneck, and tons of collared lizarsa around though. Being from Maine, the diversity of herps here is great. Do you know anything about hognose snakes in Kansas?

Hotshot Apr 12, 2006 08:37 PM

Dusty, plains, and eastern hognosed range into Kansas. In your neck of the woods, well plains, your most likely to find the eastern and plains. The dusty is in the south central portion and only ranges up a little ways into KS.

You should get out and look for Great plains rats, Prairie kings, Central plains milks, Osage copperheads, Western massasauga rattler, and right on the border of prairie rattler range. I never did see any rattlers while out there, but I did see plenty of osage copperheads. I relocated a bunch of babies from our housing area on Ft Riley while I lived there!! A female must have given birth pretty close to my house, because for about a week I was catching them in my yard and driveway. Fearless little buggers, striking at anything that got near them. I had to warn the neighbors so their kids would be on the lookout, and so no one would mess with them and get bitten.

Keep us posted on what else you find out there!

so westerns aren't native? any idea if that means I don't need proof/permits to breed mine, which are CBB, and sell babies?

FloridaHogs Apr 12, 2006 09:18 PM

Some states (such as Florida) require you to have a permit to sell reptiles, regardless of if they are native or not. I will try to see what info I can find out for you. Normally, if you look on the states Fish and Wildlife site they will tell you.

Here are a couple of website regarding the sell of reptiles. Best I can tell, if they are non native, and you are simply selling the offspring of your breeding stock from your own home, then no permit is required. I also included a quote about native wildlife. Hope this helps.

I think that plains and dusty are western hogs. It seems to me that you would need a permit but Im not sure at all. good luck.

Westerns are native to KS. Dusty hognose is an invalid subspecies so all the hogs in Kansas are Plains, or Western Hogs.
I don't know the KS laws regarding sale of native species.

laws : that snake could be a juvenile yellow belly racer. It's hard to determine with that only picture. I live just south of there and to me this snake has to much pattern ( picture ) to be the speckled king . None of the holbrooki that I've seen there or in the flint hills has that much pattern. BUT they do farther southwest and even is speculative of inter-grading with splendida. Like I said > another close up pic would tell me. Laws on selling native species of Kansas : a valid hunting license to collect or a receipt to prove it was bought, a commercial permit to sell native species with 3 paper documents >
#1...one for the wildlife agency
#2...one for the buyer
#3...one for you to keep

Laws regarding Kansas hog nose > NOPE ! A listed non-collected species ( at least it was ). Legal again with a receipt of purchase from out side of state and or receipt from another commercial in-state breeder and commercial permit to resale.

At first glance, I also thought King. But then I looked again and the tail is way too long for that. So, I pulled out my old book on Kansas snakes and sure enough, the pic really does resmble a young Yellow bellied racer, especially with the pattern matching and fading to brown.

You know you could be right!! After looking a little closer after your post, it could very well be a juvy racer. A better pic would be awesome.

That thing really did look like a young kingsnake in the first shot. I figured the brownish looking tai was an optical artifact.
Obviously it is a racer!

Nice speckled kingsnake !

Snake_Master Apr 13, 2006 07:33 PM

Yeah at a quick glance, speck king comes in lol, but after taking another look it does resemble a yellow belly racer, yet i know kings are very common in Ks. But like everyone is saying. We need better pics ! especially of the head.

polosue25 Apr 14, 2006 07:51 AM

juvi yellow bellied racer? cool how would a speckled king look different if I were to find one? (going out again today after my exam as long as the sun is out)

Hotshot Apr 14, 2006 10:00 AM

A speckled king baby/juvenile will be black with yellow to pale yellow crossbanding on its back and some speckling on the sides. The head will be way different than a racer, smaller eyes and a more blunt appearance. As they age into adult hood the crossbanding disappears and is replaced by a yellow spot on each scale. Hence, speckled king. Here is a pic of my sub-adult speckled king...
