Beardie Problems

The Original Dan Apr 12, 2006 06:21 PM

My Simon is now 5 years old and I got her as a baby from the local Petland Pet Shop. She has always been on the smaller side compared to her two house mates who I got from breeders. Last week she started to scratch alot (at this time I had removed the sandbox from the tank in order to get new sand a couple days prior). When I checked in on them at night I noticed three unfertilized eggs. After laying her eggs Simon will hardly eat and she has lost considerable weight especially since she was a samll girl to begin with. I have started to grind crickets mixed with mult. vits. in a blender and am feeding her this way. Is there anything else I can do. I read Mystical Dragons post about unfertilized eggs and its possible she has more but when will she lay them. She has her sandbox but i never see her in it.

Not sure what you mean by sandbox, but most female dragons won't lay in dry sand. You need to use moist soil, vermiculite or bed a beast. The substance should be damp enough to form clumps when squeezed but not have any water dripping out. A heat light above it to warm it is also a good ideal. The depth of the egg laying medium should be 8-12" and the container size a little more than the length of your dragon long, and about half that wide. Depth should be deep enough to hold 12" of medium plus a few inches to spare (a 14-16" deep container is good).

all females will lay eggs in their lifetime, whether they are fertile or unfertile is to be determined. if she hasnt been with a male then of course they will not be fertile. my females usually do not eat much, if at all a week or so before laying eggs and until they are done. when i start to notice my female digging in her cage i feel for lumps in her stomach, feels like small marbles, those are the eggs. i then move her from her cage to a laying bin. i use damp 50/50 soil and vermiculite. i pack it down very tightly so it doesnt collapse when she digs her whole to lay in. i use a large rubbermaid tub for her to lay in with proper heating and UVB provided. i have had my girls lay as quick as a few hours from when i put them in the laying bin or as long as 3 days. i have also found giving them a bath relaxes the dragons, if they are being stubborn about laying the eggs.

i hope this helps. if anyone else sees anything wrong with what im doing please respond to let me know. these are methods i have been taught by other breeders.
