phiber_optikx Apr 12, 2006 09:43 PM

I would say 77-83 is the best. Just aim for 80 and you'll do fine.

I think 88 is a little high
I would try to stay between 78 and 82
may take a few days longer to hatch but higher temps have been speculated to cause kinks and other problems.
It hasn't been proven yet but the evidence is mounting.

I've always heard 80 to 82 degrees. If you go too high, you can get kinked babies.

xblackheart Apr 13, 2006 11:29 AM

I heard Jimmmy say the same thing. What exactly is a "kinked baby"? Is it a snake that is deformed and can not stretch out straight? I've just never heard this term used before.

It is a deformity in the spine.

They will get kinks in their spine. Some are pretty bad and some actually disapear as the snake grows.
I have a butter that I adopted that can not stretch out completely straight. She has a couple of pretty bad kinks.
I received her and three everglades rat snakes from a friend in Florida. They were non feeders and two of the everglades along withe butter had bad kinks.
One of the everglades died. The other kinked everglades is doing well and his kinks aren't very noticeable now. The other everglades, the one without kinks is probably around five feet long, now. These two everglades are living with Zach (Snake Master) now.
It took me several months to get her eating but she eats well, now, and is actually a pretty girl but small for her age. She is an '04 and only about 28 to 30 inches.

Sorry about my terminology.I'm referring to spinal malformations were, like you said, they can't straighten out.I had some last year.I used a cheap digital thermometer with no back-up. jeff

Depends on your setup.

If you keep a constant temperature, shoot for the 82-84 F range. From the studies I've read, that is either optimum or just off optimum.

If you use a day/night temperature cycle, then 88-90 F day, dropping to the low/middle 70s F at night works fine. This has produced up to 100% hatch rate with no kinking, for me.

I've had eggs hit 92 F for a few hours and hatch fine, so I am sceptical of the high temperatures produces kinking theory.
