Traveling with baby Herman's tortoise?

TurtleTatt Apr 12, 2006 09:05 PM

Any suggestions for traveling with him? We will be camping a lot this season and would rather have him with us... any suggestions for compact travel that he wouldn't be too stressed about?
We REALLY don't have anyone locally to watch out for him...

We only did this once but the year we took in our first box turtle, she'd been dog attacked & hurt badly. She had to be put back together by a vet.
A month or so later she seemed to feel ok, was eating ok but we had to go to a family reunion, it'd been planned a year earlier. Thankfully it was only for a weekend and we had electricity, I don't think I would've done this if we had no access to electricity.
I couldn't leave her outside at home because she needed to remain clean, I had nobody who could keep her for me, I had nobody to give her her daily baths, nobody understood how she needed to be cared for so...
we got a big Rubbermaid storage box, put an old towel in it & took her with us. I brought extra towels in case she got one dirty. I brought a heating pad to put under one end of the tub and a heat lamp to use in day time that I could clip onto the tub.
I brought food for her & she did just fine staying in our room in the rented cabin.
She turned out to be kind of a hassle because she wanted out to walk around often.. I know I got on everyone else's nerves by allowing her to do that.
Oh well.. it was the in-laws, I didn't care LOL!

That's the only time we took one on a trip with us. Since then I've found a good sitter I can trust.

We brought his regular home enclosure. He did perfectly well! He got lots of outside sun and ate and went to his water to drink sometimes.... overall, a perfect travel with him...
Our Yellow Bellied Slider had a slightly harder time as he had a travel home and had to ride dry in the car.... the ride home today he enjoyed climbing all over me and I think we bonded more today.... I may just have to let him climb all over me for the trips we take hehe...

Good I'm glad things went well.
My turtles do well when we stick to routine, if travel becomes routine to yours then it shouldn't be a problem.
