chris show me close ups of your racks...

eatinmachine Apr 13, 2006 12:14 PM

I want to see mainly your one heated with rope light. I have heated one with rope light and want to see what you did differently. I cannot get pix up as I have to digi. I have one more rack to build but have picked up some 11 inch flexwatt and a thermostat for that. Deciding how to make it though. Thanks chris and anyone else.

Hi Josh,

I built that rack but it was for a friend and no longer in my snake room, sorry.

I did not do anything special. Just some rope light and Reflectix and it worked well, at least in my already heated room.

Let me know if there is anything particular you want to know.

Can you tell me what you used to make the shelves (probably melamine). Did you use anything to stop the light from reaching the animals? Did you put it on a dimmer or thermostat?
thanks Josh

The rack was all 3/4" melamine. The back was open except for a couple of thin strips of wood to stop the boxes from sliding. It held both 28 and 12 qt. boxes, with the 28 qt. sliding in width-wise.

The rope light at max output still did not produce dangerous temps so I just used a dimmer.

Rope light was on a timer to shut off at night. Many species do not require supplemental heat at night unless they are kept in a very cold room. I have kept every species in your signature and would not hesitate to do the same with them, again unless the room was very cold. But in that case you'd probably want something that heats up more than rope light anyways.

Thanks, and wow you have kept some pretty cool snakes then, I didn't know that anyone kept things like vine snakes, and hooknose snakes, and savus. But yea thanks I leave it on all the time on a dimmer too, actually it produces almost too much heat that is why it is on a dimmer, the rope light stays on all night and I stop the light with a beer sign that transfers the heat over. I used reflectix to keep heat going in the right direction. Thanks for the help.

Actually I have never kept a hooknosed snake, although at at time I would have liked to. I overlooked that species in your signature.

Glad to hear the rope light is working out for you. They do make blue and red filtered types that should be much better to leave on 24 hours per day.
