very confused about my female

beachbeardies Apr 13, 2006 12:20 PM

ok i know we all have seen the male dragon head bob, and i have seen a submissive slow head bob from a female when being around male. but lastnight i saw the oddest thing from my female dragon, SHE went after my male biting his neck and head bobbing very hard and fast like a male. and her beard got very dark like a male. i dont understand this. and she is Definately a female, i have checked her since she was a baby and shes been checked by vets and other breeders and hobbiests i know. please tell me if this is something normal or what? will she breed with my male? confused.....

I've seen my females do the classic male breeding habits. And i know that they are females for sure because they have layed eggs. My females will do the violent head bob and get the black throat that males get. I think the females do this when they are in need of breeding (ie- the ideal time to breed).

SO i wouldn't be worried...it happens. If you are tring to breed then put them together.

I know with chameleons if this happens (no head bobbing but aggressive behavior) it means she is NOT receptive and telling him to stay away :-O I do not know if this is true for bd's but it would make sense.

My females show breeding behavior right befoer they start cycling eggs. It has worked as a cue for me with breeding.. When I see my females start doing this to their cage mates usaully 9 times out of 10 when I place them in with a male they breed within seconds.

We have occaissionly experienced this over the years. Usually when they are separated and later re-introduced, things work themselves out. The male can become intimidated by the female if she is over aggressive.
