Snapping turtle tanks on a balcony

athos_76 Apr 13, 2006 05:23 PM

I just built a double decker tank stand for my two snapping turtles. Each one has a 75 gallon at the moment. I used the simpson strong tie kit for a workbench with some minor changes. The kits are awesome. Well with some coats of valspar its done.
The questions...
I want to keep this on my 2nd floor balcony, which isn't in direct sun, but is not screened in. What precautions should I take? Bugs, pest, birds, etc. I know these guys are used to swampy conditions, and here in So Fla they get it.
But I don't want them catching anything.

I also built a cabinet to house the canister filters in so I won't have a huge algae problem.

Well, the first precaution is not to stand underneath the balcony.

Seriously, 75 gallon x 2 is 1200 lbs. That's a lot a weight to put on a balcony.

well, each tank is about half full. And with the stand, I say no more than 800 lbs. And the balcony has to be rated for more than that...
