Feeding

zugzug31 Apr 13, 2006 10:51 PM

I have a snow corn that is roughly 6 months old and feeds regularly on f/t hoppers. I was curious if I could feed it a live one instead next time. I know that this could be dangerous to the snake if it gets bit, but I just wanted to see if it had any of its natural behavior left. Would it be worth the risk to see or should i just stay with f/t?

i know for a fact that some snakes....once they've had live they never go back to f/t. my gertrude is living proof. no matter what she wont eat anything else. not even tease f/t trust me the snake knows how to kill so its just stupid to try.

From my experience, snakes do not lose their natural behavior. I have noticed a few of my snakes that are "clutzy" when it comes to wrapping around and strangling a mouse, but they still know what to do. If you really want to see, knock the mouse in the head to make it senseless. Less chance to harm the snake. Some might say this is cruel. Its up to you

I ask because when it was younger it wouldnt squeeze the pinkies, but just start eating them while they were alive. I guess Ill just stay with f/t so I dont have anymore problems.

Cute pic. Corns don't usually constrict pinkies because there is no need. It's when the prey gets bigger and struggles more that they constrict.

I fed my snow Misty a live one once when we could not find any f/t and I did not like it. Misty knew exactly what to do. She darted after it and constricted it right away. Watching that poor little mouse trying desperately to survive and seeing the mouse trying to bite my beloved pet was just too much, I got very upset and had to leave the room leaving my husband to watch and make sure everything went ok. I will never feed live again.

Just wiggle the mouse in front of the snake. This will usually trigger a more aggresive feeding response. (constriction)

Then I'd say your snake has perfect aim. He meant to get you!! lol. He went for the big warm object that, because of the mouse hanging from you fingers, smelled like mouse.
