Ending supplements??????

Grish Apr 15, 2006 06:38 AM

Hey all! About a month ago I posted about an underweight uro that I took to the vet. Just finished up the three doses of Panacur the vet perscribed for pin worms, so we'll see if he starts adding some mass.
The vet (who is supposed to be "herp vet," not just a small animal doc that will see a reptile) asked me about supplements and advised me to stop dusting food once the uro gets older.
I wanted to ask all of you on the forum if you've ever heard of this, because I haven't. He couldn't offer a reason to stop, just said the adult lizards didn't need them. I strongly question this advice. Even though the bulk of the nutrients should come from their diet, I don't see why supplements, such as Miner-all w/ calcium, would hurt. I've read of a condition known as hypervitamintosis where the herps are recieving too much supplementation, but my understanding is that this is very rare and you'd have to practically pour a can vitamins down the animal's throat for this to be a problem.
I don't plan on ending my supplement regime for any of my herps, just wondering if y'all have ever heard this, as well.

I certainly have not heard of this. I was told to decrease the frequency of supplementation as they got older, particularly of calcium, but noone has EVER said to stop completely....

I think that you are correct in questioning him. Plus, imo, a vet should ALWAYS be able to give an intelligent reason, and if they can't at least offer to go review the literature to remind themselves of what the reason is. I know that I am very spoiled with the vet I have access to, but this seems like it *should* be true of any vet worth their salt.
