Why I like Jungle boas......

gray Apr 15, 2006 08:26 AM

.....the VARIETY! I know it bothers a lot of folks that you can instantly identify every true Jungle in the crowd but I love the fact that every litter will present so many different looks. A range of colors. A range of contrast. A range of aberrancy levels. Last month, I took updated photos of a Jungle litter born here on 5-16-05. They were produced by breeding a male Jungle boa to an amazingly clean & colorful "normal". Their mother has developed more and more color throughout her life. Her children seem to be suffering her same fate with some of them clearly developing her telltale bright orange. These were big babies and have a tall, muscular body form. There were 5.4 Jungles in the litter. I was an idiot and sold one male. Anyway, I just wanted to share the variety in the litter and show how they changed in their first 10 months of life.

Here was the original litter on 5-16-05:

Jungle #1: Armando

Here is a nice comparison shot at birthing of Armando and a normal sibling:

Here is Armando's baby photo:

And here he is as of 3-17-06:

Jungle #2: Rodrigo

Jungle #3: Timo

Jungle #4: Apollo

Now for the girls....

Jungle #5: Maya

Jungle #6: Gabriel

Jungle #7: Briana

Jungle #8: Oterra

And here is the one that got away: M2

If you have time on your hands, you can view all the photos. I added 123 new ones of the Jungles in this litter:

Because you can call any snake you want a jungle and there's nothing anyone can do about it. : )

....for all morphs and localities since boas became a commodity. Misidentification, whether it be purposeful or a result of ignorance, has always been common. Experience and education will allow you to get beyond this.

those are some of the prettiest and Jungley boas I have seen! Super animals! I especially like Apollo.

Thanks Chris,
It was actually Apollo's fault that I sold the other male. I figured that I really didn't need two almost completely striped males. They seemed pretty similar when they were just greyish babies but now I sure wish I had that other guy so I could enjoy raising him and watching him change like the others.

If you as the buyer arm yourself with knowledge, then no, nobody can just sell anything as a Jungle. Gotta know what you are looking for and know who you are dealing with.

Regardless of how ab their patterning is, the coloring up makes them awesome animals.

Boas make the world go round.

....I would be very pleased if they even approached the color intensity of Mom. Dad is no slouch on color himself.

some of the best jungles I've seen, I love the stark contrast.

He is perfect in everyway. Thanks for posting those great progression shots. A jungle is still on the top of my list. Good luck this season Gray. You have some awesome breeding trials.

Those little boas are simply phenomenal Gray. I have liked Armando best since the day he was born and you plucked him from the water bowl.

...that he turned out to be a good swimmer.

Very selfish of you Gray, keeping all of those AWESOME jungles for yourself! j/k. I'd have kept them all to myself too. The supers that those could produce are mind-boggling! Great litter.

.....that I am STINGY with the nice ones. Holdbacks are the best part of the hobby.

globalsnakes Apr 15, 2006 02:45 PM

They are just showing great color improvement in a short time...they will get even better as you and all of us know! Great pairing choice on your part Gray!!! Boas rule!!!

gray Apr 15, 2006 03:06 PM

...it doesn't look like Bianca is gravid this year. I paired her with an outstanding orange male but I'm losing hope for getting more babies from her this year.

Shane Kinney Apr 15, 2006 02:59 PM

...transforming nicely!

Gray,

I am very impressed. Not only by the color of the snakes, but by your self control of being able to hold onto almost every baby that is a Jungle. That is HUGE for you. Could have been huge for sales, but by holding back, you'll score bigger in the future. That principle always applies. I wish I had that self control.

AMAZING ANIMALS. Thanks for sharing. I agree with your post, Jungles really color up with age.

Jeremy

gray Apr 15, 2006 08:02 PM

....any self-control on this one. I have trouble letting any babies leave here. I just love to see how each one changes especially in the first year. Keeping them is easy for me, its selling them thats been the hard part. Look forward to seeing what boas are Utah-born this year.

styrsnake Apr 16, 2006 03:29 PM

At least I disagree with you thinking that you should not have sold that male. I must say that I am really happy that you sold that male. I will try to get you some updated pictures soon, because he just shed a couple of days ago. The rest of those guys are looking awesome. Do you have any updated pics of the siblings? Thanks again Gray for giving me the opportunity to get that male from you.
Steve

I should have kept him only because of that huge tail block that is devoid of black.....just solid, brilliant color. You can breed him once but then you have to send him back home. I haven't taken photos of the normal siblings. I should have done that for comparision. They are nice but they are not as clean, not as colorful, not as contrasty. However, I think they will eventually turn orange and be beautiful. Thanks for sharing the photo, Steve.
