Healthy new girl

wftright Apr 15, 2006 10:41 AM

I took my new girl to the vet today, and the vet confirmed that this snake is a female. They checked the fecal sample and found no evidence of any intestinal parasites. The vet said that the sores look exactly like sores she's seen on snakes that are fed live prey. She said that none of the sores are infected and said that they should go away in a shed or two. She recommended trying to get my girl converted to f/t. I couldn't get her to whistle for the vet, but the vet said that there were no signs of respiratory problems. She didn't have anything in the nostrils, and the vet said that if she wasn't wheezing enough for her to hear, then it shouldn't be a problem. Apparently, some snakes just whistle occasionally even if they are healthy. I'll give her a few more days to acclimate to the new surroundings and then start trying to feed her.

The next step will be thinking of a good name. I've thought about "Goldie" because of her color, but that doesn't seem very original. I can tell I'm getting old when I can't immediately think of any blonde actresses who appeal to me. We haven't had any hurricanes recently, so I don't have that source of names. I'll be contemplating this one for a while.

Bill

Congrats on the healthy girl! For names i just look at them what what ever they say (or what ever comes to my mind) i usually go with. If goldie speaks then do it up.

Thank you,
Dave

I was excited about calling her "Goldie" at first, but it isn't sticking with me. As Tosha mentioned below, the golden color will fade as she grows. Nothing else is jumping at me.

Thanks,

Bill

Eee - her gold will fade - name her Lassie and call it a day!

LOL - just kidding (man that was mean)!

Glad to hear that she is healthy and happy!!!

Many congrats again!

Lassie has potential. I'll add that one to the mix.

Hey Bill,
Congrats on getting a new healthy snake. I'm glad everything checked out alright. She is very good looking one at that.

Congrats Again,

Thanks, she seems to like me. I'm trying not to handle her much until she acclimates to her new surroundings, but she's a real gentle snake.

She's a beaut!

The whistling is normal especially in large snakes. My big female BP (5') whistles when she breaths. All my Retics and Burms do it also. It's strange to hear.

Glad she checked out ok. She'll make excellent babies someday. do you already have a little boyfriend for her?

I'd be thrilled if she reached five feet someday. My little one never whistles, so it threw me when I heard her.

I don't have any male pythons. I had halfway hoped that she would turn out to be a male. I could then breed her to my little female in about four years. I'm still not completely sold on the idea of breeding because I'm not sure that I could find good homes for the little ones. If I ever decide to breed, I might get a co-dominant morph so that the hatchlings would be more valuable. That way, I could sell them at lower prices and still find willing buyers.

Right now, we're still fighting anti-snake legislation in Louisiana. I bought her in part to have a second snake that would qualify for the "previous" ownership permits. I'll likely wait until I know how things will go before thinking about another snake.

Thanks,

Bill

Glad to hear all is well with the new girl. Would be great if everyone cared about there snakes as much as you. I like the name Goldie. Good luck, Jon

wftright Apr 15, 2006 01:19 PM

Thanks, I've waited years to own snakes, so I'm trying to do well by them. I never expected to be taking her to the vet so quickly. My first one so rarely defecates that I can't find a time when she's ready to give a sample and the vet can see her. When this one went right away, I considered myself lucky to have the opportunity to get peace of mind on a bunch of issues at one time.

Goldie is still a possibility for her name, but I'm thinking about several others. I'm not good at naming animals. It makes me thankful that I've never had kids.

Thanks,

Bill

Thanks, that's a good thought as well, but I don't really have a "favorte" book. When I first started thinking about names, I even thought about Frodo, Aragorn, Eowyn, and Arwen and thought that I should look through some books for a name. I like Dean Koontz books, but none of his female characters are particularly memorable in a way that leads to naming.

I'm a fan of a writer named Ann, so that's a possibility. My first daylily of the season bloomed today, so Lily is a possibility. A friend's mom suggested that I call her Ester because I bought her during Easter week. Tosha's suggestion of Lassie sounds better all the time. With the legislature trying to ban snakes, I could just pretend that she's a long, hairless dog. She could also go get help if I'm ever trapped under a tractor. I could name her Ester Lily Ann and just call her Lassie for short. Then I'd never be able to get another female because I'd be out of names. The poor snake may never have a name, but I'm having fun thinking about the possibilities.

Thanks,

Bill

Bill, that's great news!! She looks very sweet

When I think sweet, I think Cindy Lou ... after the sweet little Cindy Lou in the Grinch Who Stole Christmas.

Whatever you name her, I'm glad she is healthy and that you are happy with her, that's what's most important.

Wow, you have a better memory than I have to remember names from the Grinch.

I'm having a heck of a time trying to keep her temperatures at the right spot. She still pushes the thermometer probe out from under the hide at every opportunity. Someday, I'm going to design my own line of hides that have thermocouples built into the hide. Lead wires will go outside the cage, and I can plug into a reader and know exactly what the temperature inside the hide is.

Here's something else funny. I was on your message board when I received the e-mail that you had responded to me over here. That gave me an "Oh wait!" moment.

Thanks,

Bill

Bill, my son is 16, it wasn't that long ago I watched the Grinch every Christmas

Well, she looks blond and solid, almost Germanic.
Have you though about the names Gertrude or Hilda?

Rob Reiding.

wftright Apr 16, 2006 01:57 AM

Thanks, I hadn't thought of Gertrude or Hilda, but they could work. I think Hilda would be better than Gertrude. Ester is a possibility, and Ester is the Scandinavian spelling of Esther. While I don't think that the Scandinavians are exactly Germanic, they are both from Northern Europe and known for producing blondes.

I like the name Lily. As in Easter Lily.
Good luck with her. She looks great!

Thanks for the compliment. She's as sweet as she is pretty. I'm leaning pretty heavily towards Ester Lily but mostly calling her Lily.

My female whistled as well and the vet confirmed that there was no disorder that they could find, just something they do sometimes I guess.
