Long time reader, first time poster… Had a clutch that was laid 11 days ago and now some of them are starting to get clear spots on them. This is the first clutch that my 3 year old has had, so I really did not expect any to make it. Just need to know what causes the clear spots and if there is something that I can do to help. You can see the veins in the eggs, so I am sure they are fertile. There is only 3-4 eggs that have the clear spots and the rest (11 eggs) look just fine.

Thanks for your help…

Steve

My hypothesis on this is that the mother didn't have enough calcium. Not sure if this is right. Just my thoughts. calcium makes eggs white. clear eggs = lack of calcium. someone else might have a better idea. supplement the babies heavily once they hatch.

I agree with grimdog. That's the first thing that came to my mind was a lack of calcium. Although I'm not 100% it does make sense. I would do as grimdog said, continue to incubate them, and make sure to suppliment upon hatching.

This happened to my eggs when they got too wet. as soon as I lowered the humidity so that water didn't drip onto them from the lid of the incubator, they went back to normal. as long as the eggs were not like this when they came out, I dont think the problem is not enough calcium.(although if you werent expecting a clutch of eggs, there prolly isnt enough calcium as it is). try making sure the water doesnt drip onto them and maybe they will turn normal again like my first clutch of the year did.
