Red Black Rat Re Descovered

Sighthunter Apr 15, 2006 06:25 PM

I released a Red Phase Blackratsnake a few years ago. I found it where I released it. The red is visable in the scales if I had a decent camera. I will try to get some better pics. Of the hundreds of Black Rat snakes I have found in our area this is the only one that has had red in the scales.

I saw a shipment back in the ealy 80's of Black Rats from Indiana that (on mature specimens)had black blotches on red.

Haven't seen anything like them till now. Nice snake!

Wow that blk rat looks like a rusty ....sweet find...can we get a full body shot ?

Sighthunter Apr 15, 2006 08:35 PM

It is a male and he had a very large meal inside of him. I will get a full body shot as soon as he finishes his meal. Since there is a Black Ratsnake crowd that I was not aware of the last time I caught him I will catch a female from the area and breed them. The area is somewhat isolated and I might get lucky and find a red female. Fun project now that there are people who apreciate them.

Very nice.

A few years back I found a similar individual here in Oak Ridge, TN. This fella was even redder on the sides, with brownish blotches. Very tame and healthy. Unfortunately, I could not keep him because of the idiotic laws here.

Good Luck!
