Setting up cage... help please!

etaNcixelsyD Apr 15, 2006 08:09 PM

HEy ive got a ten gallon tank that i'm preparing for a lizard that i'll hopefully get, and i was wondering if gravel is a good bottom stuff material. What do you all think? And for a hiding/shedding/etc. box, would a wooden enclosure about 5"X10"X"5" be big enough? (i think i screwed up which is which, its 10" wide.) sorry for the confusing questions. WHat else should i add, otehr than water and rocks and stuff?

well no you shouldnt use gravel because the gecko could actually swallow a peice when trying to attack its prey and then youll be in trouble. you should use paper towels. also you need a moist hid and a dry hide. as long as the gecko
can fit in it you should probably be okay. :D

is there anything better looking than paper towels i can use? like woodchips? and for the dry hide can it just be a rock that he can crawl under?

well no there really isnt anything that looks better then paper towels, I wish there was! Its the safest. Well the dry hide can be a rock or whatever but you need to make sure that they cant get hurt on it and it doesnt wable or anything like that. Also bothe hides should be dark. Gravel and wood chips wouldnt be good because the gecko can accidentally eat it wich could cause dealth, also the crickets hide in it and then they can never eat either. Some wood chips are actually poisonoss to leos, I forget what kind it is.

well... if you are not content with the looks of paper towels, you can always use repticarpet. it comes in different colors to match with whatever you decide to put in there.

i cant think of any potential dangers the repticarpet can create, but im sure there are many people here who know much more than i do about these matters, so if im wrong, please correct me.

good luck with your setup.

we have slate tile in our larger geckos cage and he loves it since we added it hes been very active. For our baby we use non adhesive shelf liner its tan and cut to fit the bottom of the tank unlike with paper towels the crickets dont run under it and the worms dont burrow in it. it looks really nice and its so easy to clean. I hate the idea of paper towels I think they look terrible and personally how happy would you be living on a paper towel if your natural habitat was in the rocks. I dont like the repti carpet because it seems hard to keep clean and their nails can get caught in the threads. Also my baby likes moisture and the paper towels were always wet and then they tear easily.
