long trip with leo

DancyTangerine Apr 15, 2006 08:21 PM

I am moving from North Carolina to British Columbia, Canada, this summer. I am wondering what is the best way to travel with my leopard gecko. To my knowledge, there is no airline that allows you to bring a leo with you in the cabin. So if I fly, my gecko will be placed in the cargo. If I drive to Canada, it will take 5 to 6 days at least. I am a little bit worried about how animals are treated in the cargo, and I am leaning towards driving. While this long trip is very stressful for my gecko, at least the temperature is under my control. What do you think? I welcome any suggestions.

okay, you could carry on your gecko but keep it in you pocket so when they scan your bag they cant see it. bring a small extra bag so you can put your gecko in it once you get one the plane and so it feels safe. you can bring a portable heat pack too, $2 dollars from a reptile store here in cali. as long as there are no dogs you should be okay. i dont recomend the cargo because you probably need some stupid permit or something to go across the border. i have also heard horror stories about animals in cargo on people planes.

or you could have your gecko stay with a friend for a day or two until you get to your new home, then you can have your friend mail it to you in the 24hour express. you also would need a heat pack for this and need to prepackage the gecko so the post office/UPS/fedex wont know its live and make you get a permit. just make sure you mark the box acordingly, frgile ect.

or you could just drive. all that i would think you could get away with if you were carefull. also if you drive and when you cross the border dont let the border people see it either because they could get weird too. its all something i would do, however im young and dumb, hahaha. good luck!

First, never try to sneak anything on a plane very bad idea. Not sure how cargo would work or even if they alow it.
Easiest for the gecko would be shipping it to yourself, problem is I think there are issues shipping to canada, I think you have to jump through alot of hoops for it to be legal.
Driving wouldn't be an issue for the gecko as long as you didn't leave it in the car or anywhere where it gets too hot. But once you get to the border I don't know how easy it would be to get them in, there could be problems there.

You need to talk to a breeder from canada that ships to the us or vice versa. Only larger ones do that I have heard , I know urban gecko is in Canada, maybe you could email craig. I think they should be able to help you.

good luck

well i know a lot of people with animals they shouldnt have, they have to sneak them on the plane form other contries. its the easiest way but if you get caught its not fun.....

You are playing with fire! The fine can be $100,000 and jail time. Don't play with customs/agriculture inspections when you are traveling from country to country. That advice is horrible. You are better off robbing your local bank than trying to sneak animals around.

Thank you for your suggestions, guys. Sounds like driving is the safest way to transport my leo. Importing a reptile is legal in Canada and I am not worried about that.
