Best Tree frog?

MissMiniZoo Apr 15, 2006 08:38 PM

What is the most interesting tree frog to keep in your opinion? I've been thinking about White's and Red Eyes. Any suggestions?

I like both, we've been working on our tank for about a month now, we're getting RETFs. You really aren't going to see them do much but I think they're beautiful and love the setups.

White's have a curious face to them and may be able to be handled and aren't as fragile as RETFs. Which ever (but especially with RETFs) make sure you have the tank already set up and tested for correct temps and humidity levels before adding frogs. Messing with their tanks really stresses them out and that is the main cause of death for RETFs.

you can check out the other board I'm on, repticzone.com/forums there are others with the white's which after seeing them so much have really grown on me.

i would do darts, the blue ones w/ black spots are always out and are very active. they are a little harder though.

Do you know what species they are?

they are Dendrobates azureus, sorry, not too good at remembering latin names. they get the largest and are the easiest to care for. you can house 3 in a 10 gallon with lots of plants and such. good luck!

As much as darts are interesting, they are a little harder to care for if you don't have much experience with frogs.

Besides, you said tree frog didn't you?

White's and red eyes are both great choices, you really have to go with what you are prepared to set up for and clean up after.

Hi
Thanks for your post. I've kept firebelly toads for about 4 or 5 years now so I'm sure I could handle the dart frogs. I also had an iguana and currently have turtles, so I am familiar with creating a suitable environment for reptiles and amphibians.

I have my firebelly toads in a planted tank that is 3/4 land and 1/4 water. I don't really need to clean the tank much besides changing filter pads and cleaning the glass.

If I were to keep White's, darts, or Red Eyed Tree Frogs in a planted tank would I need to clean the tank more than I do with my firebellies?

Depends on the tank. With the WTF, you are going to want to spot check for defecation, as they tend to tromp everywhere and will drag themselves through it. You will also want to change the water frequently, as they tend to defecate in the water more often than not. Of course I don't have a set up with a filter and everything for mine. The RETF will be just about the same, spot check, even though their poo is smaller, most of it should get absorbed by the plants. For the darts though, the setup should be able to take care of itself, there shouldn't be alot of maintenance, beyond changing the water occasionnaly and trimming the plants (the usual) Their poo is so small that it isn't an issue, but they are super expensive to set up for! (currently getting things together for darts myself.)
