Heating pads and snake racks question...

Nicodemus Apr 16, 2006 08:00 AM

Has anyone tried the Exo-Terra heat pads for snake racks?

I bought some thinking the extra thinness would be ideal. But now I'm not so sure...it says glass only in the directions (wish it said that OUTSIDE the box).

But on the other hand, I do have a thermostat as well to keep them from getting too hot. I can't imagine them melting the plastic or burning...

Did I just waste a bunch of money?

You should be fine. I keep a mixed collection and have plastic racks heating boxes up to 90-93 degrees. No problem with melting, etc. I have used wooden racks for the same species, same temps, no problem. You do need to use some type of controller and NOT run the heat pads wide open. Many of the pads produced today have an upper temp range that is safe but I would still use a controller.

I have a thermostat, but unfortunately it only has one probe for 3 plugs. I figure if I put the probe in the top shelf it should be ok for the other 2.
I'll just check the lower shelves when I put them in to make sure those are staying the consistent temp.

Of course if this doesn't work, I'll probably just get more thermostats....

Thanks for taking some weight off my shoulders!
Whew!

.......check the wattages of the heat pads so that it doesn't exceed the wattage rating of your stat,i'm sure you know that just a reminder.have fun!

Lets see...the three pads are rated at 8 watts each...
I'm using an ESU triple plug thermostat thats rated at a thousand watts...so I think I'm ok.

Thanks for telling me though...quite honestly, I never thought about that.
But its good to know these things BEFORE I put it all together...so again...thank you!
