clay2003 May 19, 2003 03:20 PM

hi desert, So. Cal. appx. 3 inches, looks like the pics of a zebra tail, but no tail stripes, and the back and tail have a nice pale blue wash, down the sides are a soft yellow, and along the bottom jaw line, is orange color. There is also a black or dark blue spot right in back of the arm pits on each side. VERY nicly colored little dude once you really look at him!!

Not a zebra tail, a side blotched lizard. Neat animals, the biggest one I've ever seen was about 7 inches long with a full tail.

The lizard you saw was a male(bright colors) the females have more muted brown and gray tones but you can find females with really neat patterns.

I was just loking at the field guide, and I don't think it IS a Side-Blotched lizzard. Ours had more of a cute, horned lizzard kind of face, and ALL smooth scales/skin, not any larger ones, or pointy ones. Seemed to be marked very different too. but then again, the field guide shosw a muted,brownish/tan, striped (female?) too!

If it looks anything like that(it is a male) it was a sideblotched lizard.

Thats a female.
