Breeding Blue Tegus

ferox May 19, 2003 03:26 PM

I just acquired 3 blue tegus. I have one large adult male and 2 adult females. All are eating well. I have them in a 250 gallon tank with Aspen Substrate. I keep a 4 foot (5.0) UV light and one large heat lamp for basking.

I would like any tips regarding special things that I can do to induce breeding. Not sure if I should hybernate, seperate or just leave them alone. Your help is appreciated

Come on guys... is there anyone who is willing to give me a hint on the best way to get my tegus to breed?

Blue tegus are relatively new to the herp community and not many people have experience breeding them. I think Ron just discovered them in a shipment of columbians in the 90s. If you read Berts site he said that hibernation was the key to breeding his Argentine B&W (from a cooler climate). But you would think they are closer related to the Argentine tegus because of their size, temperament, looks, and after all they've produced hybrids with reds. You might want to try and hibernate them if nothing else works.

Thanks a lot Rollin... Strangely enough I was working on the lighting for my cage and stuff just this morning low and behold...and the male was breeding with one the females. Maybe I should just leave them alone....

However, I noticed that the female he was mating with started chasing the other female around and started biting at her. I removed the other female right away as it was getting ugly!

Is is usually ok to have breeding trios for Tegus or is it better to pair them up?
