Farli Apr 17, 2006 12:16 AM

I have a female leopard gecko that i believe is getting ready to lay eggs and she is in the area i have set up for her and she seems to be trying to lay them. twice she came out of the area, opened her mouth and then closed it, opened it again and coughed up red stuff. it doesn't seem to be blood, but i am worried!!! please help!!!

Call you herp vet if she has not laid. While waiting give her a worm soak. Coughing up red stuff doesn't sound good at all, unless it looks like substrate from the lay box. If she is a firt time layer, they tend to take some time to lay that first clutch, digging for a few days is normal. As they get more expierenced they dig just before laying and are pretty quick about it.

well she passed away last night. When I took her out after she died, her abd was red and bloated where her stomach was located. I opened her up (i am wierd like that) and there were several white and yellow masses attatched to her stomach. i am assuming she had cancer. I took the eggs out and are incubating them, we will have to see if they hatch, although i don't think they will. I am very upset about "Violet" passing away and really hope her 2 eggs hatch so i have her decendants...

That really sucks. It could have been parasites attached to the inside of the stomache.Or possibly ticks or somthing like that. What was her age/weight? The white things could have also been egg binding.

I am so sorry to hear this, It sounds like she was hemmoraging internally, I am not a Gecko expert but I do emergency animal care and it sounds like there was no way to save her at that point when you first noticed the problems. Its also very hard to say what she had without a necropsy done by a Vet. Did you know when she was bred? That might help you to know if the eggs have a chance to hatch because you took them out of her instead of them being laid. I hope they do hatch and please keep us informed. Good Luck! Deb

I dunno when she was bred...i had put a male that i didn't think was adult enough (guess he was obviously) and just noticed about a week ago that she was carrying eggs. I know she was eating and drinking and i was giving her liquid calcium orally. I have the eggs set up in an incubator and one has gotten firmer. i will keep you guys updated...
