Ants in out door enclosure, Aaarrrgggg..

Quinton Apr 17, 2006 09:30 AM

It's true!

Ants love the same food boxies do.

What can I use to get rid of these unwanted party guests; that won't harm the turtles?

Thanks in advance,
Quinton

Well darn I was hoping someone else would answer with a better suggestion than mine.
I have hummingbird feeders hanging off the roof of my porch & they attract a lot of ants. I bought ant baits that are supposed to be staked into the ground. I can't stake them in the ground because of the dog, tortoise, turtles, etc. So what I did instead was tape them onto the railings of the porch where they are out of reach for pets & that worked.
These ants come walking in line to get to my feeders, they don't make that far because they take the bait instead.

Thanks for the input. I took your idea and went the other way with it.

I lifted up a rock that was really close to the entrance/exit of the ant bed and found just what I expected. A ton of "road ways" and "traffic". I dug a 3" hole in the middle of it and placed an ant bait in it. I then covered it up with the dirt and placed the rock over the top of the whole thing.

Today-No more ants!

Only time will tell if there will be any adverse effects. I'm thinking not, since ants arn't on the regular diet(at least not that I have noticed...).

However if there are... i.e. dead turtles/bad eggs/deformities, ect. I will report.

Thanks,
Quinton
