Last year I found 2 baby turtles in my swimming pool and I kept them and they are as healthy and happy as they can be. About 4 days ago I found another one that had been sucked into the filter so I got him out and made him a good set up with a light, heater, basking area and everything he needs. I am concerned because he keeps his eyes closed most of the time and he doesn't swim much. When he does open his eyes they look fine..their not swollen,no puss or anything. I was wondering if because he was in the pool that maybe the chlorine or something has irritated them. Any ideas? There isn't a vet any where near me that treats turtles so I really don't know what to do.I would greatly appreciate any suggestions. Thanks,Brandy

THe best thing to do is go to the vet. You said there wasn't a reptile vet near you, which is common. It is uncommon however for a vet to admit it cannot or does not deal with reptiles. You should find a vet ASAP that does. The only thing I can think of is an eye infection, but you said that the eyes aren't swollen. Not entirely sure but I do think it is an eye infection so get it to a vet, even if its not.

Where are you located?

I am in Mccalla, Alabama. I called the vets that are in my area and they said they do not treat "exotic" animals...and they couldn't refer me to one. I was like okay should I just let the poor thing die?? I don't know what to do. I went to a pet store today and they gave me some turtle eye drops..I haven't used any yet..I'm scared..should I?? Could the drops make it any worse? ~Brandy

Geez - I check the herp vet list I have and there is one in Birmingham and no others where listed. If you are too far from there at least call this one. They may be able to help you and/or consult with a local vet near you and help get this guy the help he needs.

Will the eyedrops hurt the turtle (not likely) Will the help the turtle (even less likely)

Good luck.

My turtles also close their eyes sometimes, the weaker it is, the more it seems to do that. I think it's because of the chlorine, because as soon as I put in dechlorinating "fluid," they seem fine. However, if the eyes are at all puffy and/or red, then definitely give him something.
