Keeping male and female together ?

Tammy Apr 17, 2006 10:40 AM

Hi All,

I have a male that is about 1.5 years old (partial pin) and a female (also partial pin) who is about a year and just about the right weight for breeding (Geckos are from Neoscales). Both animals still have tails and are kept seperate. What I would like it is put the female in with the male and leave them together to live but I don't want the female hurt. Does anyone keep a pair together all the time or is the general way to go to keep them apart once breeding has taken place? And if I do keep them apart. how long should I leave her in with the male for breeding? I have the Rac book and read this forum but don't often see this talked about so sorry if I have missed it somewhere along the lines.

Thanks,
Tammy

I keep my males with my females all the time. I have 1.3 breeding groups and I have never had problems with the male attacking or hurting the female and no tails have ever dropped while they were together. It is just easier this way because you don't have to determine when to put them together. They just do their business at will. Copulation often looks painfull because the male generally bites the neck or front legs of the female and the female will often make noises but I have never seen any scars or injuries as a result of breeding.

Hi Ryan,

Thanks for the reply. Ok, so I will try it....the male has the biggest house....3ft tall by 2ft by 2ft so I would like to add the female to his big house. Do I just put her in and leave them be? Or is there a better way to go about introducing them?

The only thing that I would suggest is that you introduce the famale to males cage during the day. This will minimize any conflicts since the male will be sleeping. And it will allow the animals to adjust easier. It is not uncommon that you will get breeding the first night after introduction.

Thanks
