Ugh it finally happened.. pet store

PHRatz Apr 17, 2006 10:48 AM

We live in an area where two towns are very close together. Only 20 miles apart so it's easy to go from one to the other to shop, work, goof off, whatever.
This weekend we went to the other town to goof off. That town has many more pet stores than this one does & for the first time ever, I saw baby sulcata tortoises for sale.
It was disgusting!

This mom & pop store has a doggie bakery in it so I thought hey lets take a look at that but when we walked in, it had a light stench of dirty pet store. It wasn't the God awful burns my eyes and nose stench yet but it's getting there.
I know they all have some odor, they can't avoid having some odor but stench is unacceptable & this one had the beginnings of the stench. Buy fresh baked food for my dog from a dirty store? I don't think so.
I saw filthy parrot cages with filth that's built up and dried on then I saw filthy rodent cages where rodents are walking around on mounds of old food. Sure a few bites are going to be dropped on the bottom but this looked like cages hadn't been cleaned in a week or more.
I won't buy anything from a store that keeps filthy cages and has the stench.
The baby sulcatas oh man.. I looked in & said to DH they're marked for death.
One looked almost there, the other 3 were very active but the food in the bowl was a mixture of colored pellets, fresh apples & bananas. All wrong, it was sickening.
I want to save them all but I walked out because I can't do that. I know too that if I buy from a store like that it keeps them in business & I don't want that either.
For years I've been so lucky to not see this, I wish today I hadn't seen it over the weekend.

Where do you live? You should go back, take some pictures, and report them to Animal Control. Usually they get fined a bunch of money, and sometimes they get shut down, it's worth a try. Also, they usually put them on a contract and make them clean up their act, so again. . .it's worth a try.

OH Yeah!! You've just reminded me, I know someone who lives here who used to work for animal control in that other town. I'll give her a call & talk to her about what to do.
Good idea thanks!
