Perlite~~Vermiculite?

fattiesnleos Apr 17, 2006 02:50 PM

okay i have been incubating my eggs in vermiculite and have had no problems and have had many succesfull hatchlings so far and a few more eggs ready to pop! my question is does anyone know whats better, perlite or vermiculite? besides personal preference maybe some reasons why one might be better then the other aswell? thanks to any replies in advance.

Hi Fatties..., I was told that Perlite holds moisture longer and I have personally used it with excellent results for Beardie and Ball Python eggs. My first gecko eggs are in Perlite now so I will see how they do. I have never used Vermiculite before but my brother who is a Boa guy uses the mixture of both and likes it the best. I am sure its just a preference thing for everyone But I could be wrong. It will be good hearing what others say about it. So what morphs are in the incubator now for you? Deb

you can add more water to perlite and dont have to water it later on like you would vermiculite. So basically you dont get the dry clumps(from what i hear... I had problems with vermiculite for that reason especially seeing i was using the real fine stuff that allowed poor ventilation....perlite is better for overall ventilation and moisture but i personally think its hard to come by.... a good mixture of perlite and vermiculite seems to be the best...as for ratio...im lost lol ...i took this season off so ill be trying things once i buy a new male for my big girls

I like perlite because of the dryer feeling surface. It breaths really well and excess water drains to the bottom. I don't like to keep my eggs on a moist surface due to problems with mold, but instead like a dry surface with good humidity.

Really both work. The main reason I like perlite is I already use it as a soil additive for plants to increase drainage, so I have a lot of it around. No reason to buy both when I only need one!!
