Recent WC Yellow Rat

crazycorn Apr 17, 2006 06:39 PM

Well I was checking on everyone today and took pictures, I didn't notice last night but the Yellow Rat I caught is olive green with bright red eyes! Weirdest looking Yellow Rat I have seen. I thought I would share, I couldn't get a true color photo, she is a nice olive color. Found in South Florida.

Hey Dave,
What do the yellows look like in the Port St Lucy area?
Strong stipes?
Strong Yellow?

They look like you typical Yellows here, nice yellow color with heavy stripes. I also found an Everglades near this road.

...are quite diverse throughout their range, huh? I've seen lots with orange/red eyes. Other rats as well.
Maybe Nick will post pics of a pair we found Sun. in Hernando. Pretty strongly striped and otherwise quite dark up there.
Sure are doing well everywhere I guess.

Hey Mark,
I'd like to see those from Hernando.
When I found animals 30 years ago from the Hernando / Inverness area, they seemed very yellow with strong stripes.
Of course, your mind can be very wonderful about remembering things better than they were!!!!

Thanks,
Those are great.
I'm always amazed how thick the stripes are on some from that region. They remind you of the animals up in N. Georgia and the Carolinas.

Both found crossing the road in Hernando County on Sunday, within about a minute and a couple hundred feet of each other. No other live snakes were seen that day.

Male:

Female:

I wish I could post better pics of the female, but she wouldn't stay still.

Thanks so much for those pics.
Those animals are the ultimate classic Yellow to me.
Strong stripes - very little juvenile blotching.
