hey lele, bug question

Captotterboy Apr 17, 2006 06:54 PM

Lele,
I just read your articles on silkworms and hornworms and they look alot healthier for my cham than the superworms/waxworms/mealworms/cricket diet i had been feeding him. I think he is too small still for the hornworms, and ill pick up some silkworms the next time i go to the md reptile show (easier than ording them).
Do you know anything about butterworms?

Can you tell i was doing a feeder research night?

hehe, thanks,
Jeff

Hey Jeff,

sorry about delay in replying. I was away from the forums for a couple days and still catching up!

Butterworms are very fatty but also high in calcium. They are a fine as a treat and will keep for a LONG time in fridge. They lose their fat overtime in the cold.

Your previous diet is fine - variety is key and that is what you were doing. If you can find silkies at a show - great! No one around here breeds them (except me and that's just for me ) Just make sure you also get the chow or have access to Mulberry leaves.

If you get little hornworms they will be fine for your guy. They are expensive to buy. I am thinking of breeding some to sell eggs to forum folks. I'll have to see if I can fit it into my wild silk moth rearing this summer. I won't be able to supply chow - I'll keep everyone posted.

here are a couple links to bug nutrition charts - will give you a good idea.

this one is specific for butterworms.

you can also add phoenix worms. Here is the main seller link, but Mulberry farms, American cricket ranch and other's are selling them now, too.
