In an effort to keep perspective I feel clarification is necessary. Sometimes in a debate both sides will distort the data to make a point, this is an effort to keep focus. First point is not all snakes respond to carotene. Second point is there is a difference between carotene and carrotinoides but I will use carotene for both in this post. They both serve the same purpose more or less. Some respond better to one or the other and not all respond. IN MOST CASES I FEEL that there has to be a GENE that will allow the carotene to work. In some cases the difference is dramatic, noticeable. The first three years the control studies were not cataloged well but when it was evident it was working the data has been tracked and control studies refined to determine exact responses to the supplement. There are currently eight species of snake I am working with in my control studies and all respond. My unicolored Cribos have the least difference, the dorsal scales turn light yellow from a cream color but it is a noticeable change dorsal surface has no change. Some of the most noticeable change is in Sub-Ocs. The animals that respond to carotene, do so within two shed cycles. Some get bright yellow and others go orange MOST have responded in my control studies. Sub Ocs seem to be one of the ones to sea-saw, bright with carotene and duller without where other snakes, a little will go a long way. It seems to be split between diurnal and nocturnal, while then nocturnal snakes being the ones to go back and forth in direct proportion to the supplement. Hope this helps I do not claim to have all the answers but I am willing to share what I know. And finally YES Dusty I do feel that there are Sub-ocs that will turn orange without any supplement whatsoever.

to pollute the whole danged forum
You know if you would feed your bairds some carrot juice they could look just like everglades rats!!!

Sorry, couldn't resist

I really like bairds, used to have some screamers from Juno Rd.
They are very underrated.
Cheers,
Max
