VIET NAM NEWS AGENCY (Hanoi) 17 April 06 Workshop discusses wild crocodile protection
Ha Noi (VNA): Viet Nam organised a workshop in Ha Noi in ccordination with the Mekong Wetland Biodiversity Programme (MWBP) to discuss ways of rescuing a wild freshwater crocodile species found in the Hinh River district of central Phu Yen province.
The wild freshwater crocodile species, also known as Siamese crocodile or Crocodylus siamensis, was earlier listed as extinct by the World Conservation Union (IUCN).
However, a year ago, experts from Viet Nam's Tropical Biology Institute, the MWBP and the Fauna and Flora International (FFI) found one wild freshwater crocodile weighing 100 kg in the Hinh River, revealing a crocodile community inhabiting in this area.
